Is Programming Important to Learn? Is there a need to teach Computer programming at the high school and post-secondary levels. The answer is yes! A lot of parents think their children are computer wizards because "They are always on the computer" and " They know more than me" but most of the time what they know is not all that useful eg. how to use facebook or a browser and a little photoshop. I am not the only one who thinks this. The link below talks about a new cheap computer called Raspberry Pi but one of the main reasons for this machine is to encourage students to learn to program. ICS2O1 In grade 10 students use Adobe Flash (ActionScript 2.0) to create games. The games can be simple dragging and dropping of symbols around the screen to complicated games involving characters that move, jump, go in different directions etc. In fact, some of students last year used characters in their final programs from a clothing company this was started by St. Robert grads. The former students put some of the games on their blog and ran a contest where visitors could play the games and vote on which one they liked the best. At the end several students won prizes contributed by CryWolf clothing for their efforts. Programming in Flash is just one of the things we
do in grade 10. Students also work with Excel, PowerPoint, PhotoShop, InDesign, and Word.
ICS3U1 ICS3U1 is our largest group of students with 3 large sections of more than 25 students each. We program in Visual Basic 6 in grade 11. It is an extremely easy language to learn to use. It allows the students to create good looking windows programs in a very short period of time. The class also touches on PowerPoint, PhotoShop and other software relevant to high school students.
ICS4U1 The grade 12 classes (ICS4U1) learn to program in java using the NetBeans IDE. The grade 11 course is a prerequisite for this class. Even in grade 12 we will do some PowerPoint and PhotoShop to have a little break from coding. Many Object Oriented Programming concepts are taught and/or touched upon in ICS4U1. |
