St. Robert First Robotics Team 4001
"Every Piece Has Its Place"
Its Alive!!!
No not Dr. Frankenstein's monster but FRC Team 4K1's robot. On Monday Jan.17 the builders tested the chassis in the large gym (thanks Mr. Tucci) in front of the rest of the team and staff mentors. Kudos to Mr. Chirrey, Adrian and the build team. The robot flew around the gym controled wirelessly by the joystick attached to the FRC webbook. It is a great accomplishment for our team to have it done in just over a week. Save for a minor equipment glitch that Rick Hansen SS solved for us and it would have been speeding around last Friday.

Take our Rules quiz
You could win a prize.
100% gets you a prize.

And now it starts
The competition is now underway. We have seen the challenge, we have returned to St. Robs with our parts, we have brainstormed (even Mr. Keenan played nice), and we have started to build.

January 7th
On Jan 7 teachers and a couple of students will head to the Ontario Science Centre early in the morning. Yes I know it is still the Christmas Break but on that morning world wide, NASA is going to show us all what this year's robotic challenge is going to be. We will also be picking up our robot (at least the parts that will be assembled into our robot).

A planning and construction session will take place on both that Saturday and Sunday. We hope to have our mobility (our base) completed by that Sunday night. Joining us on our build that weekend will be some engineers from our initial sponsor and egineering mentor Quanser Consulting Inc. More details will follow this week so keep consulting these pages.

Are we Famous?
I recently received an email from a friend congratulating St. Robert on our partnership with Quanser. When I asked how she had heard about she said that a colleague had seen a news release on a website... the website of the Sacramento Bee (yes California).

See the link posted below for a report on the visit described in the news release above. Thanks to Quanser and Paul Gilbert (CEO) and Tom Lee (Education director) for the visit and blog.

Silicone Bands Now In!!
All team 4001 members should drop by to see Mr. Keenan and pick up their 4001 - "Every piece has its place" wristband. This is the first of our swag items that we are using to promote our team. For the team members they are free but if you want to support us you can buy one for $1.

Spirit Sweatshirts
There has been a lot of interest in getting a spirit sweatshirt by members of team 4001. We will be ordering some in the new year at a cost of $30. It will have 4001 across the back and on one sleeve our Retro-Rams logo will be embroidered. Check the order form for other sleeve choices. Please return the form to Mr. Keenan with a cheque made out to St.Robert.

Woburn CI -Team 188
St. Robert now has a mentor (a veteran team ) to answer whatever questions we might have and to help us get ready for our regional competition. In Fact, Woburn is THE veteran team ... they were the first Canadian First Robotics team. Check out their team page at http://www.team188.com/web/index.php?page=main&pagetitle=Woburn+Robotics

What Robotics is all about...
Watch these videos to get an idea about why we are doing robotics.

First Robotics comes to St. Robert!

The staff of St. Robert has decided to enter into the wild world of robotics by joining the renowned First Robotics competition.

The reputation of the students at St. Robert Catholic High School for having expertise in the area of science, math and technology has attracted the attention of the Canadian First Robotics organization and the owners and engineers at Quanser.

As a result we are starting up a Robotics team of students that will be working side by side with professional engineers, gaining practical experience in constructing, designing, programming and problem solving.  The students on this team will design, build, program and test a working robot at the First Robotics competition being held at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga on March 29, 2012.

All coders should prepare for the arrival of the software (LabView) by watching the training videos created for FRC by ETC. A good set of tutorials are available at the link below.
